3 Apixaban Lecture Notes For Healthcare Professionals

 

1. Apixaban is a Direct Oral AntiCoagulant (DOAC) that works on Factor Xa, 25% of the drug is cleared renally, and the half-life of the drug is 12-15 hours.

  • Eliquis


3. Indications of treatment with Apixaban:

  • In Atrial Fibrillation (AF) as a prophylaxis for embolic events like ischemic stroke, the dose is 5mg every 12 hours, but if the patient has a decreased Glomerular Filtration┬áRate (GFR) the dose should be reduced to 2.5mg every 12 hours.
  • Acute Venous ThromboEmbolism (VTE), 10mg every 12 hours for 7 days, then 5mg every 12 hours
