2 Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) Lecture Notes For Healthcare professionals

  1. Genetic concordance for type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is almost 100% in identical twins.



2. Diagnosis of DM according to World Health Organisation (WHO) 2006 guidelines:

  • Symptoms of DM + Fasting Glucose levels ≥7 mmol/l (125 mg/dl).
  • Symptoms of DM + Random Glucose levels ≥11.1 mmol/l (200 mg/dl).
  • Symptoms of DM + Glucose levels after 2 from 75g Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)   ≥11.1 mmol/l (200 mg/dl).
  • No symptoms of DM + Fasting Glucose levels ≥7 mmol/l (125 mg/dl) on 2 samples on 2 separate occasions.
  • No symptoms of DM + Random Glucose levels ≥11.1 mmol/l (200 mg/dl) on 2 samples on 2 separate occasions.
  • No symptoms of DM + Glucose levels after 2 from 75g Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)   ≥11.1 mmol/l (200 mg/dl) on 2 samples on 2 separate occasions.
